A note on our Agenda in Winnipeg
Friday 5/16/2014
Dear Learning/Action Lab Colleagues:
What we heard in our last curriculum advisory committee call was that you are ready now to switch our conversation from a discussion of “what” and “why” (the focus of our first year together) to a deeper conversation about “how” (the focus of our second and third years together).
We propose to respond to your request in two ways:
All of us (The Democracy Collaborative organizers, as well as members of the cohort) would like to be able to learn from the experience of others, both “best practices” and mistakes that we might avoid. That has been a focus of our visits, panel discussions and individual consultations to date – and will continue to be a focus as we move into the second year.
As we head into the next stage of these projects, ALL of you will be looking for employees and partners in your home communities. Finding those people, inspiring them to join you, and training them to be employees and ultimately worker-owners are essential next steps. Our agenda in Winnipeg is an attempt to address the unique challenges of building social enterprises and employee-owned enterprises in Indian Country. We hope you find that the agenda for our time together in Winnipeg meets your needs.
Deep Regards,
Marjorie Kelly and Jill Bamburg

What we heard in our last curriculum advisory committee call was that you are ready now to switch our conversation from a discussion of “what” and “why” (the focus of our first year together) to a deeper conversation about “how” (the focus of our second and third years together).
We propose to respond to your request in two ways:
- With a Tuesday morning focus on learning from managers and worker-owners about the realities of actually creating and running employee-owned enterprises. This will be addressed through both a panel discussion and an opportunity for one-to-one conversations between participants and panelists.
- With a Wednesday morning visit to Urban Circle, a 23-year-old community-based organization where we will learn about their process of pre-employment training and job placement for Aboriginal women and men. We will visit their location and meet with their elders as well as graduates of their program to learn about their decolonization approach to personal healing to help indigenous people grow their own personal capacity.
